This is a story about an Austrian Girl called Magdalena, living the dream in New Zealand, talking about one of her surf experiences and the Photography behind it. Enjoy!
6:00 am: Mags are you ready for another surf trip?
6:02 am: Sweet as! I’m always keen for the fun stuff.
6:05 am: But don’t forget your camera! Gonna pick you up with the surfvan in 10 mins!
These pictures might just look like normal surf photos to you. To her, they sure are a lot more than that. This was her life. A life full of big dreams, an endless ocean with big waves and the addiction to go out and expand limits more and more. She loves the vibe of living in the moment and enjoying life. The pretty sunrises, the cold water, the question mark to the unknown and the awesome people are the reason for unbelievable memories and surf photos. She tried to capture her friends as natural as possible. Most of the time they didn’t even know she was taking photos. She was sitting on the beach with a smile on her face, starring at the endless ocean, watching the boys surf and capturing their movement with her camera.

Surf photography usually requires a long lens and a tripod. Generally, in sports photography it is important to have a fast shutter speed to freeze the motions. Although, to create different and more interesting photos, photographers should play around with different shutter speeds and see what works best. The water can be frozen, it can also look as if it is still flowing and smooth. She found out, that the photos turn out a lot better in the morning as well as the afternoon, when the sun wasn’t that harsh anymore. Surf photos look better with an offshore breeze and with the correct direction of the sunlight, hitting the wave. Surf photography became a passion for Magdalena.
Unfortunately, she didn’t have the right camera. But she still tried to give her best with the given situations. For her, it was always important to include the pretty beach, the whole situation and the atmosphere in the picture. She generally always tries to show the people’s emotions and to make it as natural as possible. Another tip is to not just sit on one spot at the beach. Walk and look around. There are so many hidden angels and views that need to be seen! Be creative and give it a try too!
